Big Sandy Fire Chief Larry Waters has announced that the new Big Sandy Fire Hall will have an Open House on Sunday October 23 at 2pm. Governor Haslem presented Big Sandy Mayor Ron Lane with a grant award of $112,000. The governor along with State Representative Tim Wirgau, Senator John Stevens, Robert Martineau, commissioner of TN Dept of Conservation and Environment(TDEC), and Gerald Parrish, Director were on hand to announce the awards.
The grant will be used to fund Phase 1 improvement to the Big Sandy City Park, including an additional ballfield, improvements to existing ballfield, new restrooms, playground equipment and increased accessibility to all areas. The grant requires a 50% match by the Town of Big Sandy for a total project cost of $224,000.
The Big Sandy Chamber of Commerce met on Monday night January 11th for the purpose of electing new officers for the year. Those individuals elected were: President Tm Phifer, Vice President John Melton, Treasurer Emily Dykes and Secretary Autumn Radliffe. There was also a discussion about the annual Big Sandy Spring Festival that’s held each year on Memorial Day weekend in May. The Town of Big Sandy has a new Police Chief. He is Jim Sukash, a resident of the Big Sandy area. Jim has an impressive resume of law enforcement credentials. He has served as Police Chief of the US Coast Guard Academy Police Department in New London CT; He has served on the US Coast Guard Tactical Law Enforcement Team North-Hampton Roads, Va; US Coast Guard Integrated Support Command Police Department-Kodiak, AK. He has 20 plus years experience with the U.S. Marine Corps and US Coast Guard.
The Big Sandy Chamber of Commerce met on Monday night to make plans for the annual Spring Festival coming up on memorial Day weekend. For the last several years the Festival has been a three day event but the Chamber has decided to make this years festival only a two-day event.
